Career Development Resources

Career Architect Development Planner by Michael M. Lombardo and Robert W. Eichinger

A fantastic resource for building and developing skills and competencies.  The book identifies 67 competencies related to career success, 9 universal performance dimensions and 19 career stallers and stoppers.  Each section helps you identify problem areas and gives solid advice for different ways to improve.  A good resource for individuals and the people who help them grow (managers, HR, coaches).

Do What You Are by Paul D. Tieger & Barbara Barron-Tieger

Discover the perfect career for you by understanding your Personality Type (based on Myers-Briggs).  Read case studies of people who share your Type, learn what career satisfaction means for your Type, and explore updated and detailed lists of occupations that are popular with your Type.  I have turned to this book for over 10 years whenever I’ve contemplated a career change.  Highly recommended!

The Pathfinder by Nicholas Lore

This book is getting rave reviews from my clients and on Amazon about how to have a fulfilling career and life.  I haven’t personally tapped into its wisdom, but if I was trying to figure out what to do with my life and career, I would definitely turn to this book.

StrengthsFinder 2.0 by Tom Rath

An easy and powerful way to discover your unique talents.  Once you complete the accompanying assessment you will be provided with your top 5 talent themes with ideas for action.  A great resource for individual discovery and team development.

Smart Networking by Liz Lynch

How to build and maintain relationships that will support you in meeting your goals.  I appreciate her focus on adding value to the people in your network.  Great section on connecting “one to many” including how to leverage online forums.

What Color Is Your Parachute? by Richard Nelson Bolles

A classic for job-hunters.  I have particularly appreciated the “flower diagram” set of exercises which lead you to better understand yourself and what you have to offer to the world.  These exercises can also be found in the Workbook if you don’t need all the other job hunting advice.
