April and May were crazy busy months for me between work, family, vacation, volunteer responsibilities and birthday celebrations. When I looked at my calendar in early April I became completely stressed out, and my long-standing worry about not having enough time to do it all came rising to the surface.
When I recognized this, I began to ask myself, “How can I do this with ease?” This question became my mantra for the past two months. I was inspired to create and use a mantra by one of my yoga teachers who shared her definition of a mantra: “a thought that protects the thinker”. Isn’t that a delicious way to think of a mantra? Especially given that so many of our thoughts do not protect us, and lead us down rat holes away from what’s most important to us!
With this at the forefront of my mind I tapped into what I’ve learned from the Academy for Coaching Excellence about ease….here’s what made the biggest difference for me these past two months:
- Shift the Focus – Whenever I found stress creeping in, I shifted the focus of my attention to my mantra, “How can I do this with ease?” The thoughts we focus on are powerful and it’s amazing how much more breathing room one can experience by simply shifting the focus of one’s attention.
- Support – I got over my belief about having to do everything myself and asked for help from others…lots of it. Asking for and letting in support has been a huge shift in my life since I started down this coaching path. And I love that when I ask for support it gives other people an opportunity to make their unique contribution to the world.
- Savor – Wherever I was, whatever I was doing, I focused on being present and savoring the moment and not worrying or thinking about what needed to be done next.
- Gratitude – I expressed my gratitude to others for their support, and regularly gave thanks for the blessings in my life.
I can’t say that I was *always* a vision of ease in April and May, but I did make it to June in one piece! What might you do to bring more ease into your life?
